Feelings of dizziness and balance go hand in hand. When one feels dizzy, it can create difficulties with walking, driving, moving through daily life, and problems at work. Dizziness can also lead to feelings of nausea and headaches. Vestibular rehab therapy helps patients learn how to improve their balance and reorient themselves spatially when an individual is suffering from a condition that is causing vestibular impairments. Physical therapy also seeks to ensure that core muscles remain strong enough to support the individual, and that a patient does not lose flexibility or their quality of life while recovering from their condition.

Vestibular conditions may be caused by a variety of injuries or conditions. Feelings of dizziness may be caused by an injury or impairment to the inner ear. Visual impairments may also create difficulties with spatial movements and recognition. Degenerative neurological conditions or conditions affecting the area of the brain that controls balance may also be affecting vestibular problems. Finally, damage or an issue to the central nervous system, or nerve damage, may be contributing to balance challenges. Our Melbourne physical therapists approach each situation with the goal of helping with such issues. Contact us today to get started.

Comprehensive physical therapy treatment performed in conjunction with other medical treatments

headache treatment

The first step in treating vestibular problems is to have the initial cause diagnosed. An audiologist may put you through a vestibular test battery. One may also be referred to an ophthalmologist or a neurologist to diagnose the root cause of the issue prior to physical therapy. Once the root cause has been determined, your physical therapist will evaluate your balance, your gait, and your arm, legs, and core strength to put together a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.

Conditions that are appropriate for vestibular therapy include:

  • Vertigo
  • Migraines
  • Stroke
  • BPPV
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Meniere’s Disease

The root cause diagnosis will generally guide the duration and frequency of physical therapy sessions. If patients are unable to do at home exercises safely, they may require more outpatient sessions at the clinic. The focus of vestibular rehabilitation therapy includes eye movement training, balance retraining, strengthening, and stretching, in conjunction with any other treatments being conducted to address the root cause of the impairment.
